How many porta potties do I need for my event?
An event needs 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests when it lasts up to 4 hours. A 150-guest, 6-hour wedding with a bar needs 6 units: 150 ÷ 40 = 4 (rounded up), plus 2 for alcohol (150 ÷ 100, rounded up). Enter your numbers below; the calculator shows each step.
What does the porta potty chart say for 50 to 500 guests?
The porta potty chart gives standard-unit counts by guest count and event length. A 100-guest party under 4 hours needs 2 units. A 200-guest event of 4–8 hours needs 5 units. A 300-guest all-day festival over 8 hours needs 10 units. Add units for alcohol using whole-number steps below.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | 4–8 hours | Over 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 guests | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 guests | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 guests | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 guests | 4 | 5 | 7 |
| 300 guests | 6 | 8 | 10 |
| 500 guests | 10 | 13 | 17 |
Adding units for alcohol
If the chart says 4 units and 150 guests are drinking, add 2 units (150 ÷ 100 = 1.5, rounded up to 2). Drinking guests use restrooms more often, and lines form near the bar first.
Adding wheelchair-accessible units
The 2010 ADA Standards (section 213.2, Exception 3) require at least 5% of portable units in each cluster to be accessible. For 1 to 20 units, that is 1 accessible unit. For 21 to 40 units, it is 2. The City of Boulder asks permitted events for 10%.
Adding hand-washing stations
Plan 1 two-person hand-washing station per 4 toilets when food or drinks are served. The PolyJohn Bravo station holds 22 gallons of fresh water, which the manufacturer rates at nearly 350 uses per fill.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site needs 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c). From 20 to 199 workers, OSHA requires 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. A Longmont crew of 30 therefore needs 1 seat and 1 urinal, which most renters cover with 2 standard units.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1) |
|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 toilet |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers |
Read the official text at osha.gov. This is the legal minimum. Our recommendation: add a unit when crews exceed 15 people on a single shift so lines stay short. See construction rentals.
Is the guest count rule different for weddings and festivals?
Weddings and festivals use the same 1-per-50 base rule, but both usually need more. Weddings run 6–8 hours with a bar, so most land at 1 unit per 30–35 guests. Festivals with beer gardens need the alcohol add-on and an accessible unit in every cluster. Separate men's and women's units add 1 more.
Plan by event type: wedding restroom planning, party and festival planning, or compare a restroom trailer against single units.
Sizing questions
How many porta potties do I need for 100 people?
100 people need 2 standard porta potties for an event up to 4 hours and 3 for an event of 4–8 hours. If alcohol is served, add 1 more. A 100-guest backyard graduation party of about 5 hours with beer and food needs 4 units plus 1 hand-washing station.
Is one porta potty enough for a 50-person party?
One porta potty is enough for 50 guests at a party of up to 4 hours with no alcohol. For a longer party or one with drinks, rent 2. Many hosts rent 2 anyway so one can be marked for women and one for men.
Should I get separate porta potties for men and women?
Separate units for men and women cut the wait for women, who take longer per visit. Rent an even number of units and we can hang his-and-hers signs. Units marked for men keep the urinal; the seat stays cleaner in the women's unit.
How many wheelchair-accessible porta potties does an event need?
An event needs at least 1 wheelchair-accessible porta potty in each cluster of up to 20 units, under the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2. Above 20 units, 5% of each cluster must be accessible, rounded up. Check your venue or permit office, which may ask for more.
How many porta potties for a 10-person construction crew?
A 10-person construction crew needs 1 porta potty under OSHA 1926.51 Table D-1, which allows 1 toilet for up to 20 workers. Weekly service covers a crew of 10. A crew of 15–20 working long days often adds a second weekly service for $65.
