How many accessible porta potties does an event need?
An event needs at least 5% of the portable units in each cluster to be accessible under the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, Exception 3. For 1 to 20 units in one spot, that is 1 accessible unit. Construction sites used only by crews are exempt. Your permit office or venue may ask for more.
Official guidance: U.S. Access Board guide to toilet rooms. The City of Boulder asks permitted events for 10% accessible units with a minimum of one.
Who else uses a wheelchair-accessible unit?
A wheelchair-accessible unit also helps guests with walkers or canes, older guests who struggle with a step, and parents helping a small child. Anyone can use it. Hosts of reunions and memorials often rent one accessible unit for those reasons even when no guest uses a wheelchair.
Accessible unit questions
Is your accessible porta potty ADA compliant?
Our standard accessible unit is the PolyJohn Comfort XL, which the manufacturer describes as wheelchair-accessible with a 60-inch turning space and handrails. If your permit requires a unit designed to ADA portable toilet requirements, ask for the PolyJohn WE'LL CARE III, which we book on request.
Does the wheelchair-accessible porta potty have a sink?
The accessible unit does not have a sink, because the floor space is kept clear for a wheelchair. Add a hand-washing station and place it on firm, level ground next to the door.
Why does the accessible unit cost more than a standard one?
The accessible unit costs $50 more per event because it is larger, heavier and takes more truck space, so fewer fit on one delivery run.
Where should the accessible unit be placed?
Place the accessible unit on firm, level ground with a clear, smooth path, such as pavement, packed gravel or plywood over grass. Keep at least 5 feet clear in front of the door.
